Our Story

Built by people who
live inside gyms
for a living.

HotelFit wasn't born in a marketing meeting. It was born in a hotel room at 6am, staring at a broken treadmill and a dumbbell rack that stopped at 30 lbs — after paying $400 a night. We knew there had to be a better way to know before you book.

Worldwide Traveler
Hundreds of hotels inspected across major US cities & international destinations

We got tired of the
guessing game.

Every fitness-focused traveler knows the frustration. You book a hotel that promises a "state-of-the-art fitness center." You pack your pre-workout. You set your 5:30am alarm. You get there and find two broken treadmills, a cable machine missing half its attachments, and a dumbbell rack that tops out at 25 lbs.

Hotel gym photos on booking sites are a work of fiction. They're shot with wide-angle lenses to make 400 square feet look palatial. They show the equipment on delivery day — before years of wear and neglect set in. They never show you what matters: whether it's actually usable for a serious workout.

"The only people qualified to review a gym are the ones who understand what a gym is actually supposed to do."

HotelFit was built to fix that. Our inspection team brings something no travel publication, booking site, or review aggregator can match: the clinical eye of a physical therapist, the programming knowledge of a certified trainer, and the spatial expertise of someone who literally designs and builds gyms for a living. We know exactly what a gym should have, how it should function, and when it's falling short — because we've built them from the ground up.

We travel constantly. We inspect relentlessly. We publish honestly. No score is ever for sale, no review is ever softened to protect a brand relationship. Just the truth about what's behind that door — however we got there.

Why Our Reviews Are Different

The credentials behind
every inspection.

Most gym reviews are written by travel bloggers. Ours are conducted by healthcare and fitness professionals who understand the difference between a gym that looks good and one that actually works.

🩺
Licensed Physical Therapist
Clinical Movement Expertise
A PT sees a gym differently than a casual gym-goer. We assess equipment for biomechanical integrity, identify injury risk factors in poor equipment design, and evaluate whether a facility can support rehabilitation as well as performance training.
Why it matters for you
We'll flag the equipment that's dangerous to use, not just broken — and call out the gyms that create injury risk through poor layout or inadequate maintenance.
🏋️
Certified Personal Trainer
Programming Intelligence
We evaluate gyms through the lens of actual programming — can a serious athlete complete a full training block here? Is there enough variety for periodization? Can a beginner build a sustainable routine? We assess for every type of traveler.
Why it matters for you
We tell you specifically what workout styles this gym supports — and which ones it can't. No more guessing if your training program will work on the road.
📐
Rehabilitation Gym Designer
Facility Design Knowledge
We design and build professional training facilities for a living. We can look at a gym layout and immediately identify wasted space, poor traffic flow, inadequate equipment density, ventilation issues, and maintenance neglect that the untrained eye simply doesn't see.
Why it matters for you
We grade hotel gyms against what a well-designed facility should look like at that price point — not just against other hotel gyms.
Our Standards

What we do that
nobody else does.

There's no shortage of hotel reviews online. There's a shortage of honest, expert, in-person gym reviews. Here's the difference.

Every inspection is in person
Every review on HotelFit represents a physical visit to the gym, conducted with our full 54-point checklist in hand. No relying on hotel-provided photos, virtual tours, or press kits. We evaluate what's actually there on the day we visit.
Scored by fitness professionals
Our team includes a licensed physical therapist, certified personal trainer, and professional gym designer. We evaluate equipment function, safety standards, and clinical utility — not just aesthetics.
Three access methods, one standard
We access gyms as staying guests, via paid day passes, or through press access requests. The same 54-point checklist applies regardless. Access method is always disclosed in the review — and never influences the score.
Money buys access. Never the score.
Hotels can pay a sponsored inspection fee or purchase featured placements — we're transparent about both. What they cannot do is pay for a higher score, suppress a result, or alter a published review. The checklist is the verdict, full stop.
We review for every traveler type
Every review clearly states who the gym is and isn't for — serious athletes, business travelers, casual gym-goers, and rehabilitation needs. One score, but context for every kind of fitness traveler.
Reviews are re-inspected
Gyms change. Equipment gets replaced, facilities renovate, maintenance standards shift. We revisit and update scores when significant changes occur, so our library stays accurate — not just archived.
The Inspection Process

How every review
gets made.

A HotelFit inspection follows the same rigorous process every time — no shortcuts, no exceptions.

01
In-person visit — always
Every review begins with a physical visit to the facility. We access gyms three ways: as staying hotel guests, via a paid day pass, or through a press access request. All three are legitimate — and all three are disclosed in the published review. Regardless of access method, we evaluate what's actually in the gym on the day we visit, using the same checklist every time.

02
54-point checklist inspection
Our inspector works through all 9 categories of our standardized checklist — scoring each item objectively with its fixed point value. Equipment is physically tested, not visually assessed. Cleanliness is evaluated throughout the visit, not on arrival. Safety systems are verified to be functional.

03
Clinical & professional evaluation
Beyond the checklist, our physical therapy and gym design background informs a deeper layer of assessment: Is the layout creating unnecessary injury risk? Is the equipment calibrated correctly? Are the safety standards adequate for the clientele this hotel serves? This professional layer is what separates a HotelFit review from every other.

04
Score, tier, and publish
Points are tallied, a tier is assigned, and a full written review is published — covering highlights, weaknesses, and specific guidance for different types of fitness travelers. Every review includes section scores so you can see exactly where a gym excels and where it falls short.

The Scoring System

100 points.
9 categories. No ambiguity.

Every point is earned on merit. Every category is weighted by its real-world impact on your workout.

🩺
Why Safety scores higher than it looks: Our physical therapy background means safety deficiencies — missing AED devices, broken safety equipment, injury-risk layouts — carry significant weight in our overall assessment beyond the point values shown. A gym with a perfect score elsewhere can still receive a lower tier rating if it presents serious safety concerns.
Access & Disclosure

How we get in.
Always disclosed.

Every review clearly states how we accessed the gym. Four methods — same checklist every time.

Staying at the Property

We're staying at the hotel for personal or work travel. The gym is accessed as a regular guest. The hotel has no knowledge of the review.

We pay the standard day pass rate as any member of the public would. The hotel has no knowledge of the review. No different from a regular paying visitor.

We contact the hotel in advance as members of the press and request gym access. The hotel is aware of the review. No fee exchanged — access only.

Sponsored Inspection
Hotel-Requested Review

The hotel pays our standard inspection fee to request a review. The fee covers our time and travel — never the score. The same 54-point checklist applies. A sponsored inspection that earns a 41 gets a published score of 41.

◎ DISCLOSED: SPONSORED INSPECTION
⚖️
Why access method never changes the score

Our 54-point checklist is objective. A treadmill is either working or it isn't. Dumbbells either go to 50 lbs or they don't. The AED is either present or it isn't. No amount of advance notice, no fee paid, and no commercial relationship changes those facts. Money buys access and visibility. The checklist determines the score.

Our Editorial Standard
Money buys access and visibility.
It never buys the score.
Hotels may pay a sponsored inspection fee — this covers our time and travel. It never influences the checklist score or published result
Every paid engagement is clearly disclosed in the review — readers always know how and why an inspection was arranged
A hotel that pays for a sponsored inspection and scores a 38 gets a published review with a score of 38. No exceptions
Affiliate booking commissions, featured placements, and sponsorships are all disclosed — and none of them touch the scoring process
For Hotels & Brands

⚖️
The One Rule That Never Changes

Money buys access and visibility. It never buys the score. A hotel that pays for a sponsored inspection and earns a 44 gets a published score of 44. A hotel that purchases featured placement keeps exactly the score their gym earned. We will never alter, inflate, suppress, or negotiate a published result — regardless of the commercial relationship. This standard is what makes HotelFit worth advertising in.
